Tracing a microbial vitamin from Bacteroides to metabolic health
-
Abstract
A recent study by Luo et al. identified microbiota-derived pantothenic acid as a potential link between gut microbial function, intestinal epithelial homeostasis, and metabolic health. The authors demonstrate that pantothenic acid-producing Bacteroides species support epithelial pantothenate kinase 2/3-dependent coenzyme A metabolism, histone acetylation, Krüppel-like factor 4-associated epithelial differentiation, and intestinal barrier integrity, with downstream metabolic benefits. This editorial discusses the mechanistic strength of this microbe-metabolite-host axis, its implications for metabolic disease, and key translational questions regarding local metabolite availability, epithelial cell state, and the therapeutic potential of targeted microbial or metabolite-based interventions.
